Assistant Wrestling Coach, Walt Ulrich, Inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento City College Athletics proudly announces that longtime assistant wrestling coach Walter Ulrich has been inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in recognition of his decades of service, leadership, and impact on the sport of wrestling throughout California.
Ulrich's wrestling journey began at Corning High School, where he posted an undefeated 28-0 regular season record during his senior year before continuing his collegiate career at Butte College. There, he earned All-American honors twice with back-to-back state championship placements. He later transferred to Chico State, becoming a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and earning multiple team awards, including Outstanding Wrestler, Most Team Points, Most Dedicated, and Most Takedowns.
His coaching career spans more than 36 years and includes impactful stops at Chico State, Santa Rosa College, youth development programs across California, and nearly three decades at Sacramento City College.
Since arriving at Sacramento City College in the fall of 1996, Ulrich has helped elevate the Panthers into one of the premier community college wrestling programs in the state. During his tenure, Sacramento City College consistently remained among California's top programs and captured four California Community College State Championships.
"Coach Walt has had a tremendous impact on the sport in Northern California and he represents Sac City Wrestling and the Athletic Department with great pride," said Head Wrestling Coach Marques Gales. "His dedication to student-athletes, commitment to excellence, and lifelong service to wrestling have impacted generations of athletes and coaches throughout the state. This recognition is incredibly well deserved."
Beyond competitive success, Ulrich has played a major role in mentoring athletes, developing future coaches, and supporting the growth of women's wrestling during its formative years in California. He has also remained active in the wrestling community through clinics, camps, and mentorship opportunities statewide.
Known for his character, consistency, and passion for teaching, Ulrich's influence extends far beyond wins and championships. His impact can be seen in the countless athletes, coaches, and families he has helped throughout his career.
Sacramento City College Athletics congratulates Coach Walt Ulrich on this prestigious honor and thanks him for his extraordinary contributions to the sport and to Panther Wrestling.
